Essay Question: What techniques does the director, Danny DeVito, use in the film matilda to illustrate that the character Miss Honey, is benevolent (kind) and sweet? The film ‘Matilda’ directed by Danny DeVito and released on September 19th 1996, Danny DeVito uses various techniques while directing to show Jenifer Honey is a sweet. Such as mainly having the camera high to show how small she is, natural/ light camera lighting to make her appear innocent and mainly full shots to make her seem small. Whenever Miss Honey is in the scene she is always sweet and kind to everyone except Ms Trunchbull at times, she definitely cares for her students, she’s cheerful, encouraging, she definitely cares for her students, she’s cheerful, encouraging, she actually tries to give her students a good education, she uses manners, speaks kindly, she uses positive phrases and is quite obviously terrified of Ms Trunchbull. Miss honey has this kind and nice personality so she can be the nice person in the movie and also the mother feature to Matilda. Having all those features is very important to make the film work. In conclusion, her nice and kind personality makes it quite obvious how benevolent she actually is. In the film ‘Matilda’ the camera angles make Miss Honey have way more character. A majority of Miss Honeys scenes show the camera angles being high, close up, full shot and the camera angles making her equal to students. The director Danny DeVito has chosen for Miss Honey to have the camera angle high so it makes her seem small, innocent and weak.
